Golden Redhead

Piggybacking on my second to last post with regards to trying to get better about showing my Golden Age acquisitions, is this recently gotten Bill Walton from the 2012 edition:

"The Big Redhead" brings me up to now having 18 of the 50 autos in the 2012 set. As I near the  halfway point, the possibility of actually completing the set is starting to feel a lot more doable.

Thanks for taking a moment to look at my page.

    1. Being from Portland, I can't help but have a strong affinity for him as well.

  2. Nice Walton auto! Keep plugging away at that set, you're almost halfway home :)

I read an interesting article on ESPN where they updated the NBA's 50 greatest players list. A lot of their experts kicked Walton off the list for newer guys like Kobe, LeBron, etc... and of course Walton had this dimissive comment like the whole concept was stupid. But at the end he had a great point - there should be 70 players on the list, since this is the NBA's 70th season.

I was really into the NHL's 100 greatest player reveal and I would love to write a post listing the NBA's 70 greatest players..but I don't know enough about the pre-Larry/Magic NBA to do it justice.

    1. I'm so behind with the times, and so anti-ESPN, that I wasn't aware of any such article, I might actually have to breakdown and look for it. A top 70 players does seem appropriate given the 70th anniversary (I didn't know about that either) and all. It doesn't surprise me that Bill would have been left off an updated top 50 list, although I certainly wouldn't agree with such an omission. Basketball is a team sport, whether it was at UCLA, in Portland, or even later in Boston... Bill, a tremendous individual player in his prime, was also a guy who, because of team player mentality, always made those around him better. And in my mind that's what defines an all-time great.

Guys like Kobe,Iverson (I'm assuming he's on the new list too),and even Jordan to some extent, were great individual players -- but they never made their teammates better -- in fact sometimes they had quite the opposite affect on those around them.

I too am now intrigued with the idea of doing a top 70 list, which I think I could pull off if it was just done as a straight up list. But if there was a lot of writing involved, I don't think I'm a good enough writer to do such a list justice. It's too bad there wasn't a way to do some sort of collaborative effort.

  3. In planning to do a 25 player update for the 75th anniversary in 4 years. I'm expecting the NBA to do their own but it's not going to stop me. The list will start with Dominique Wilkins, who was the biggest snub from the original list. The other 24 will be in chronological order of joining the league. I'm trying to decide if I should do one 25 man post or one for each person, but I have plenty of time to decide.
Nice auto. He has a nice legible one. It appears three times in my collection.

    1. Man am I tired of hearing about the Dominique "snub"! The funny thing is, I never really considered it a snub. In my mind, he's comparable to George Gervin -- great scorers and fun to watch -- but there's a reason why their teams never went very far, and it has a lot to do with their score first mentality.

  4. I hope you do decide to make your own list - even if there's minimal writing (or maybe Billy can help with that) Here's the article if you guys want to look over it and work from there.

    1. Thanks for the link, I will definitely be taking a look at it. I will think about doing a list, maybe start writing down some names and see where it goes. I have a feeling though that if I did post a list, it would probably get panned, if only because of who I wouldn't be adding to it.

  5. Truly a great and I'm a big fan. If Walton had stayed healthy I truly believe he is easily in the top 10 NBA greats of all-time. Great card!

    1. Yeah, and if he had been able to stay healthy, the Blazers would've ended up with more than just one championship too.
