Much like the last few years, I had planned on doing some fun stuff (fun for me) here on the blog leading up to Halloween, but once again, ended up doing none of it (insert sad face emoji here). I have my usual excuses, which I'll touch on at the end of the post -- before that though, here's a few last second Halloween-ish items that I've thrown together to try and salvage some semblance of holiday spirit around here 👻.
I needed a card of Clive Barker (famous writer, and occasional director, of horror) for a binder page that I'm working on. To my knowledge he's only appeared on two cards, both coming from the rarely mentioned 1992 Eclipse Hellraiser set. For page purposes, a vertical card would've been preferred, but both of his are horizontal, so this one was chosen because I think it's the better of the two. I bought a few more choice cards from this set (among other cards from this seller), which thankfully just arrived yesterday, but only felt like scanning this one for now. [Note: technically speaking, Clive had three cards in that set, two were base cards, and the third is a crazy-rare autographed chase card. Since the auto can fetch hundreds of dollars, it wasn't, and likely never will be, an option for this particular blogger; hence my only mentioning two cards during the write-up]
So there you have it, Halloween stuff! This is one of two days during the year (Christmas being the other) that I kind of wish I had little ones around, I think it would be a lot of fun for all parties involved. Aside from decorating, I don't do very much anymore and I'm a bit isolated now out here in the country from all of the festivities, but this is still my favorite day of the year, and I can't imagine it ever not being so. Hopefully if anyone reading this is doing something tonight, you'll have a spooky good time.
Now, if anyone's made it this far...
It's been a few weeks since I last posted again (seven to be exact), and much like my previous couple of few and far between posts, the usual combination of too busy/tired/depressed have been the main culprits for keeping me away. I'm starting to sound like a broken record, always leading off posts by saying the exact same thing (I don't think it counts as change if I switch things up by closing a post with the same excuses). While always true, it's growing tiresome to always be spouting off the same reasons for not being able to produce the more occasional public missive or two, and I would have to think that it's growing even more tiresome for those of you that still come around here.
Aside from the same old song, I also seem to be quite burned out on sports cards at the moment. This has made keeping up with the blogs very difficult, and commenting on said blogs even more so. I've still been doing card stuff though, including purchasing quite a few, they've just all been of the non-sport variety. Knowing that non-sport cards are like the kiss of the death for a card blog, I'm not sure how many of my recent purchases will make it into future posts. It doesn't help too that a lot of them have been a bit on the older side, so I'm not sure how much interest there'll be in paper squares featuring the likes of Rex Harrison and James Mason.
Has anyone else noticed how many of our bloggers have been calling it a day as of late? I think that fellow from Sports Cards Ate My Brain was the last one, but he was like number five or six in the last 2-3 months. And that's just those that have officially called it quits, I'm sure there's been a few more who have made the decision without saying goodbye. It seems like that boom that the blogs experienced during the early days of the rona has ended, and rather then leveling off, is now trending in the opposite direction. I've seen a lot of folks mention that readership is down as well, and obviously I haven't been posting enough lately to add any validity to that, but if true, that combined with everyone closing up shop is only adding to my lack of desire to keep going on, blogwise that is. The prospect of typing into a void isn't my idea of a good time.
Oh, and if all of that hadn't been enough to keep me away, my printer/scanner crapped out too. It took a few weeks to get a new one, but I didn't have hardly any scans squirreled away for a rainy day, and my phone does not take very good pictures of cards. I got another cheap one, but from the couple of scans I've done already (the Clive Barker card and photo of me up above), it seems to be slightly better then my old one, which, if true, would be a nice surprise; especially given it's price.
Anyways, that's what's up, and yeah, I guess that's all I've got for today.
Eat lots of that sugary candy stuff today and get all hyped up, then settle in and watch the Braves close out the World Series. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't eaten any candy in probably close to 25 years, and it's been about 5 years since I last watched a current sporting event, so neither of those was going to be happening. For what it's worth though, I am pulling for the Braves :)
DeletePersonally I'd rather see non-sports card more than baseball or football
ReplyDeleteHopefully non-sports ranks above soccer as well :)
DeleteI like seeing nonsport cards on blogs. That's an area that if time/money weren't an issue, I'd branch out there. I could see having a "frankenset" of one card of each of a set of actors/actresses.
ReplyDeleteI did not know that about you! I have been toying with the idea of a non-sport frankenset for years, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Probably will someday though!
DeleteBest of luck. I haven't posted in about a month and a half. I started getting lazy about sorting new cards, and scanning new cards, and I just stopped caring. I'm back, and I'm planning on a post tonight.
ReplyDeleteI like seeing non-sport cards too.
John, you're young, you should be out doing young people things. Spending all of ones time blogging is for old folks :)
DeleteKeep plugging away, whatever that means for you. Blogging or not blogging, sports cards or non-sports cards. As long as you are doing OK, all is well.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with your assessment of the blogging community. Which is too bad. I want more fun! And more cards!
Thanks, Kevin!
DeleteHopefully the downward trend is only temporary.
I'd rather have an Ida Lupino card than a James Mason or Rex Harrison. Though I'm guessing the latter's card is My Fair Lady related, and he did nail that role.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't, but I do love that film. Just watched it again a couple of weeks ago too!
DeleteAlways good to see an update from you, and I think a lot of us are burned out on sports cards. I've been trading for some early 90s NBA singles, but nothing that felt interesting enough to discuss. Sports in general isn't nearly as interesting to me as it used to be.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed a lot of bloggers have disappeared, though I'm happy that Julie resurfaced recently. Write what you want, when you want. We'll be here :)
And I've been getting some early 90's NBA singles from the Baseball Card Store, but like you, I'm not sure if they'll be worth blogging about. Current sports do nothing for me, and haven't for a number of years now. I'm still interested in older stuff, but there's only so many older games available to watch online, and I feel like my options are dwindling at this point.
DeleteWould it be presumptuous of me to say that it seems like you may have changed your mind about leaving as well?
That's a great Lion-O costume! I don't remember seeing that one when I was kid, but I was into Thundercats as well.
ReplyDeleteMy blog is on life support these days, and I'm probably a few posts away from either calling it a day, or at the very just leaving it open-ended. I feel that way about collecting as a whole, not just keeping up a blog.
It really was! I think most kids of a certain age were into the Thundercats at the time, it was a pretty big deal there for a couple of years.
DeleteIf it's gotta be one or the other, my vote will be for open-ended :)
Great photo of a young Mr. Pennysleeves there! Thanks for sharing that. The Thundercats were definitely big back in '86. (Snarf)
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, readership has been down on my blog, too. Hopefully it's just a temporary thing. As for non-sport stuff, bring it on. I'd be interested in seeing what you've got.
I'm glad it was found. Halloween was a big deal in my house growing up, but we were always so busy that my mom didn't take a lot of photos on that day, so I think there might only be a handful of pictures (or less) of me in costumes.
DeleteI hope you're right.
Always good to see a post from you Jon. As a teenager, my sis loved Thundercats which was my only exposure to these super-felines. Love seeing your Halloween photo. It's one of my fave days o' the year. I'd enjoy a peek into your non-sports collection. I always enjoy celebrity cards (older the better) and dead, the best. LOL. Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteOlder and deader, huh? I think I can accommodate that :)
DeleteThere's still enough baseball card blog content that non-sports card posts offer a very nice change of pace! I'm down for seeing those Rex Harrisons and James Masons! (Awesome costume by the way - Thundercats Ho!)
ReplyDeleteApparently I was wrong, either that or every one is just trying to be nice?
DeleteNon-sports cards don't bother me on blogs. I'm a bit picky tho about which ones I enjoy (not a fan of most of the comic book stuff or wrestling).
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen a lot of blogs shutting down. I will say that there is almost always a downturn in the fall, usually starting September, probably because people get busier. It picks up again when the new baseball cards come out.
Well, there might be a few things coming up that you don't like then. Whole posts won't be devoted to said things though, so hopefully any possible upcoming posts will still be worth clicking on for you.
DeleteI'm not sure that things will continue to follow that trend, but I hope I'm wrong and that you're right on this one.
I have noticed a huge dip in readership on sport card collectors so i began putting up a lot less interesting posts on there. I know that seems like a backwards approach, but that blog has already been on life support this year as it is. Cards Over Coffee has never had strong readership to begin with and now it's even less. 30 or so less views a day on there makes it almost not worth putting two hours into a post between photos, uploading, research, etc.
ReplyDeleteEven a die hard blogger like myself is getting tiresome of the work and none of the benefits. Benefits to me are comments and views.
I haven't noticed blogs leaving, but I have noticed usual bloggers such as yourself and Lost Collector not posting. Sadly I think the new era of collecting has played a role with this. I can say I am not tired of collecting though, that will always run in my veins. But, blogging somedays I do. Almost been 10 years of this.
Also, I know I rambled a lot here, but once again, my TWitter and emails are both open if you ever need someone to talk to.
I think that you were the one that I noticed mentioning it first. Sometimes I get the itch to do very simple posts, but then I realize that it'll just come across as filler, which then makes me not want to do it. I'm of the opinion that too many filler posts are much worse for a blog in the long run, than no posts at all. Too much filler and people will just stop coming around. No posts at all will at least leave a few to come around and see (and hope) if anything's been posted yet
DeleteI'm trying to get back into the swing of things, but it isn't easy. The boom hasn't helped matters, but I think those people are hurting views/comments more than they are people's output.
I ramble all the time, so don't worry about it. And as always, thank you!
