COMC football dump

                                          
It's been awfully cold again down here in the land of Sleeves this past week. One would think that being stuck inside because of the cold would be conducive to "writing" blog posts, and it may be for some, but not me. I get restless when I'm stuck inside, and restlessness is the enemy of sitting down and doing anything, hence no posts this week.

I've also been in a bit of a funk again, probably brought on by the cold, but nobody came here to hear about that, so in more positive news, I received two orders from Sportlots this week, and saints be praised, the cards in both orders came in the condition they were described (a rarity for me!). I was so pleased with both orders, that I even went ahead and placed another larger one a couple of nights ago. I also sold a semi-rare DVD within just a few hours of listing it on eBay two days ago, which was extremely nice, if only because the proceeds will pay for my three Sportlots orders, and leave enough to cover the shipping for a couple of bubble mailers that I need to send out. Oh, and a somewhat hard to find Cliff Robinson (from his playing day) popped up on COMC (first one to ever to do so) yesterday, and I scooped it up within hours of it doing so! Now that I'm typing all of this out loud, I guess it wasn't that bad of a week after all, it just seems like it was.

Anyway, I don't know if ya'll have heard or not, but the BiG gAmE is tomorrow, and as per usual, it means very little to me. I have no plans to sit and waste an entire afternoon (especially one that is supposed to be slightly warmer) watching a football game (or any other modern sporting event), and because of political or social justice reasons, I just have other things that I want to do, active moving around things. I will however honor the occasion by doing a football card related post though, but since it's going to be nice outside today too, I'm not gonna waste a lot of time working on it this morning, so I'm gonna go ahead and use this Saturday, when presumably no one will be reading the blogs, to dump my misc. football scan folder; all of which came from my 2019 COMC shipment, yeah, 2019!

I had quite a bit of football in that 2019 shipment, which I broke down into four categories, vintage, 90's, color matching, and misc. The vintage portion made it onto the blog a long time ago (you could probably look for it if you really cared), but I've been extremely slow to cover the other three. The 90's and color matching folders haven't been edited yet, so that only leaves the miscellaneous stuff, which by the way is most certainly the least interesting of the bunch, and looking at them now, I wouldn't have even bothered to show them had I not spent the time scanning, but I did, and I don't want it to be for naught, so...

It seems like years ago now, and I guess technically it was, but geez was I all in on the 2018 Classics set, or more specifically, the parallels. I suppose I'm still big on it, I just haven't gotten any more since this shipment, and don't even recall when I last looked for any was.

Bo Jackson's modern cards don't do a whole lot for me, and looking at it now, I don't think I would've gotten this insert if I had it to do over again. It is die-cut, which is usually fun, but the die-cuttiness on this one is kinda lame.

Before finally becoming more focused on what I'm collecting last year, I had a tendency to fall in and out of love with things, and while I was in with them, I would often go a bit overboard in my attempt to acquire them. I had a brief infatuation with the 2015 Topps Tek purple parallels, and got a few in a very short period (probably over one evening).

Given how cheap they were, well, all except for Tommy here, I don't have any regrets in buying them, but I don't think that I'll be buying too many more (unless I come across some more cheap Barry Sanders', as I kind of want to get a full page of those). I've seen a lot of talk in recent months about acetate cards from the 90's starting to get gross (yellow), and even though none of mine have ever done that, I've still begun to hesitate some when it comes to purchasing any more, just in case. I don't know if modern acetate cards are made any differently, but I'm not looking add to many more of them to the collection either, just in case.

With there being hundreds of parallels in every single set these days, I'm not even bothering for the most part to try and remember and/or learn what is what anymore, I just go by aesthetics. If it looks good, and it's cheap, I'll get it; which is what I did with this nifty Earl Campbell! I know that it comes from the 2018 Black Friday set, but other than that, I just know it as the "199" parallel. 

I don't collect Eli Manning in the least, but I had a blue and a green version of this card, so apparently I had to get a red as well. Make sense?

I had the blue and green versions of this card too, so of course a red was necessary, right? The only difference this time is that while I don't actively collect Gronk, I do set his cards aside when I come across them. 

This one is so-so, but I do have the purple version currently sitting in my COMC account, and that my friends is quite spectacular.

Eric Dickerson is one of those retired guys that seems to have a lot of modern cards, way too many to collect all of, so I just stick to the scraps. Tired of 2015 Prizm yet? I can't hear you of course, but if you answered, yes, well, good news; this was the last of them. 

Staying with Prizm, but going back a year, we've got a couple more ED's. I don't have my cards of his cataloged yet, but I've gotta have at least 6 or 7 of parallels now, and probably duplicates of a few as well.

There are a couple of cards in this post that I wouldn't bought today, but this final 2014 Prizm offering isn't one of them, even after a couple of years I still really dig this card, and wouldn't mind getting a few more copies.

So there it is, definitely not one of my better posts (I did warn you in advance though), but they can't all be sunshine and lollipops. I can however promise that next week's two will be much better, I've got a baseball post planned (but not written) for Tuesday, and McKay's recap for Thursday, so in other words, one for you, and one for me :)

Not being overly fond of the traditional "I'll give you this for that" style of trading has had an impact on the number of cards that I've received from fellow collector's over the years.

Not being a set collector (at least not anymore) will undoubtedly have an impact on the number of cards that I'll receive from fellow collector's going forward.

Being told that I'm hard to find stuff for, has likely had, and will undoubtedly continue to have, an impact on the number of cards that I receive from fellow collector's.

If it sounds like I'm complaining, trust me, I'm not! I average probably 10-12 packages/PWE's from fellow collector's a year, and that's more than enough for me, especially given how hard it is for me to write a proper thank you post. Besides, even though everything said here today is true, it's nice to know that there's at least one fellow collector out there who hasn't had any trouble in finding things to send me (or at least if he has, he hasn't said anything), and that's, Chris, aka The Collector. I know this because the package that I received from Chris before Christmas was at least the 27th mailing that's made it's way south from New Jersey, or was it the 34th? Well, no matter, whatever number it was, I've received quite a few packages from Chris over the years, and have sent back more than a few myself.

Thanks again for the cards, Chris! This was quite the mix, you hit on guys that I'm fond of, sets that I'm fond of, and even surprised me with the inclusion of some '86 Topps, three of which were guys that I may soon be adding to my ever increasing list of player collections.

*There was one more card included in this mailing, the "big ticket" item if you will, but I've held it out because it has a direct relation to another card that I received during December, both of which will be featured in tomorrow's post.

This has always seemed like an odd photo to me, not quite as awkward as the Hank Aaron from this set, but it definitely doesn't look natural.

2018 Panini Classics Timeless Tributes Orange #102

I love Eric's card from this set, but after getting this basic orange, as well as one of the orange Optichromes, I can honestly say that I probably need them. The blue's and gold's look great, but the orange's not so much (at least not for Dickerson).

2013 Panini Cooperstown Collection Green Crystal Shard #32

Replacing one logo for another. That's exactly what Panini did with this photo, Jimmie now looks like he's playing for the National Baseball Hall of Fame's... can't say that I've ever heard of that team before?

1909 T206 #?

Harry Gaspar (misspelled on the card) played four seasons of professional ball, all with Cincinnati. During this time he compiled a record of 46-48, with his best season being his first (1909), in which he went 19-11, with a 2.01 ERA. In 1910, he and Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown led the majors in saves, each notching seven respectively.

I had forgotten that there was a stamp on the back of this one. Now I'm gonna have to go find it and see if I can see what it says.

1974-75 Topps #30

Set need. This card proved surprisingly difficult to find in decent shape for a realistic price.

2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #209

Recently I responded to a question on Twitter by a posting a picture of Shawn Kemp's 1990-91 Fleer rookie, this then led to someone who I didn't know that I was mutually following mentioning growing up in the Northwest and watching him and Gary Payton, I then said that I saw plenty of them while growing up in Portland, which led to them to reveal that they too were from Portland!!! Portland isn't a small place (at least not anymore), and I know that a lot of people have come from there, but it's still always a bit of a surprise when I encounter a fellow native.

2014-15 Panini Prizm Blue and Green Mosaic Prizms #198

Even though the 2014 set has two different kinds of all-blue Prizms (regular and mojo), I think that Elgin looks best on the blue-green combo, although him on those all-blue's looks pretty good as well, and I certainly wouldn't mind getting a few of them :)

2000 EX - E-Xceptional Red #7 XC

When talking about the big three, it's kind of amazing to see the difference in price with E-Xceptional inserts. On the basketball side they keep going up, most of the baseball are still fairly cheap (a few have gone up though), meanwhile the football is in the gutter and isn't showing any signs of climbing out anytime soon. As far as this insert goes, most of my examples are of the basketball variety, but over the last year or so I have started picking up more of the super cheap football's.

I don't know why exactly, but this seems to be Duke's most affordable base card? I would've thought that his last card might carry a bit of premium (it does for some other star players), but it doesn't, so if you're looking for a cheap Duke, and you don't care what uniform he's in, this is the one to look for.


2018 Panini Classics Timeless Tributes Gold #135

Raymond Berry has been the "special" guest at the Nashville shows multiple times now. I'd kind like to get something signed in person by him, but his prices are a bit on the high side for me, oh well, at least I can say that I've seen him multiple times in person.

2013 Panini Cooperstown Collection Green Crystal Shard #96

One of these days I'm gonna have to suck it up and just buy the Honus that I need to complete this set. I don't really care about finishing it anymore, but it would be nice to be able to say that I did indeed complete one parallel set during my time as a card collector.

As an aside, after the shuffler got done doing it's thing this week, I noticed that the COMC folder was starting to look a little bare, so I went ahead and counted how many cards were left. Apparently I've got almost exactly 12 1/2 more posts worth of stuff in there, which means this series will be going dormant right around the middle of October, I guess I better start planning on what I'm going to replace them with, it's gonna be tough though as these have been my primary source of card material for the last couple of months, and I don't foresee a huge influx of incoming cards anytime soon, well, at least not until the end of the year when I have my current COMC stash shipped, but even that'll much smaller than those of previous years.

I've noticed a lot of changes on COMC this year, most of them not being for the better. From what I've seen so far, I think that last year might've been the last year that a body could find cheap cards ($5 and under) from this set.



2018 Panini Classics Timeless Tributes Blue #158

The only way this card could have been any better is if Panini had added a green bordered parallel to the 2018 Classics set.


2012 Panini Black Friday Kings #1

I think that I've now shown the three (out of four) Progressions that I have for this card. I didn't really need them, but I also got the base card (above), and the Cracked Ice card (future post). The details that one can find on the internet about these sets are somewhat questionable (Panini didn't provide any hard numbers), but supposedly there might also be an autographed version of this card out there that is numbered to /3 or less. While owning such a card would be neat, I decided quite some time ago to pass on the whole "holding my breath" thing, as the odds of finding one (and being able to afford it) would be so slim that it just isn't worth my effort (or anguish) to try and do so.


1933 Goudey #66

Condition wise, this is probably the worst of my Goudey's from last year. Conversely, image wise, it's one of the best Goudey's that I picked up last year.

2012 Panini Black Friday Progressions - Magenta #28

I didn't see him play to much pro ball, but I did see quite a few of Brandon's college outings, and I kind of like him as a person, so why not get at least one cool card of him? I wouldn't mind trying to complete this rainbow, and seeing as how two of the other colors are currently available via COMC, it might not be too hard to do, but I haven't really put too much into it yet, so I still just have the one card here.

I don't own very many cards of Brooks Robinson. I found this one on sale for right around $4. After looking at the current prices on the site, I think it was a pretty good purchase.

1996-97 Topps Stadium Club Matrix #1

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa????????? Shawn Kemp getting dunked on?????????? Best card ever???????? Why am I using so many question marks???????????????????????????????? :)

Seriously though, I really love this card (even though the "Matrix" effect isn't visible via the scan), if only because it features two of my all-time favorite players in a highly unusual situation. Oh, and I don't know if anyone cares or not, but here's THE dunk:

1976 Hostess #95

It took awhile, but I've finally realized that I will no longer be trying to finish this set, so in retrospect, this card's purchase was not a great one -- but this isn't the first time that I've said that about a COMC purchase, and it probably won't be the last.
