COMC Hoard part 5: 1933 Goudey Sport Kings

I never really thought I would own any cards from this set, mostly because the prices don't usually jibe with my cheapness.....until now!

Both the cards in this post were acquired in the weeks leading up to the black Friday sale. Both were also acquired at extremely low prices, although their condition was likely the cause of the bargain basement cost.

First up is Charles Jewtraw:
Considering the age, I don't really consider the condition on this one to be all that bad. They had it listed as poor on COMC. Not being a big ice skating aficionado I had to use google for some info. I thought it was pretty neat to learn that he won the very first gold medal given out at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, for the 500m speed skating event. He also lived to be 95 years old, which is also pretty impressive. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information about him online, which leads me to believe he is yet another person in history who's accomplishments are considered irrelevant and/or obsolete in our modern times. Here's a link to a short article about him, if anyone is interested.

And for the second card. Here is Jim Londos:
Obviously this one is the worse of the two, condition wise. Growing up I was as big of a professional wrestling fan as can be, almost bordering on obsessive. I lost almost all interest in it though towards the end of 90's, due in large part to the entertainment (if it can be called that) aspect of the new "sports entertainment" that was soiling the airwaves. And while most kids were only interested in the newer stuff, I was a fan of all things wrestling, old and new. Therefor I was and am very familiar with Jim Londos. He was one of the original true baby face wrestlers and extremely popular in his day. I knew a little about the charity work he did after retiring, but according to multiple websites he raised a great deal of money for Greek orphans after World War 2 and was recognized for his philanthropy by President Nixon and King Paul of Greece. I think it's safe to say that Mr. Londos was a very honorable man.

Thanks for taking a moment to look at my page.
