Card show goodies part 2: A trio of Trios

Today I will show off the three 1971-72 Topps Trios that I got. For those unfamiliar, there were one of these in each pack of the '71 Topps basketball cards. Due to the fact that these are stickers and therefor peeled off and stuck to things makes these a lot harder to find than one would think. I was very surprised to see a stack of 10 or so sitting very inconspicuously on a table that was loaded up with mostly new and shiny baseball cards. Here are the three that were the cheapest:

The dealer also had the one featuring Pete Maravich and John Havlicek (Bob Kaufman was the other part of the trio), but wouldn't go any lower then $30, so I had to pass that one up. Hope you enjoyed!

Card show goodies part 1: Ted Williams

Yesterday was the second of the twice a month show in Nashville and was expected to be potentially the biggest of the year. I don't know if it was the largest so far, but with 100+ tables set up it seemed like the closest thing to the National that I will experience. There was a lot of new sellers set up and a lot of people that came from further away than usual to attend. The best part was the fact that probably 40% to 50% of the stuff was of  the vintage variety. So after 3 1/2 hours of walking around, almost 4 hours of total driving, and way too much money spent I will use the next couple of posts to show some of the better purchases. I will start with a couple of cards from the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set. Even though I'm not actively pursuing this set I was not going to pass these up a $2 apiece.

Thanks for looking. There will be plenty more in the coming days.

Props to Panini

I thought with all the negativity out there towards Panini that I would publicly send a little love their way. I don't collect a lot of newer cards and therefor don't pay attention to current products, but earlier this year I discovered Panini Golden Age and became instantly enamored with the multiple years of sets. So I bought one hobby box each of the 2012, 2013, and 2014 releases from Steel City Collectibles. I will do a future post on the contents of these boxes, especially since I think pulled some pretty great cards from them. But this post is about two cards in particular, namely two redemption's. I had not got a redemption out of pack since the early 90's so I didn't know what to expect. The first one was out of the 2013 box (a 3 autograph's box) and was expired by almost a year, but after reading the redemption website it looked like they would try to honor it anyway. And after only a two week wait this beauty showed up:

2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures Fred Biletnikoff card #FB

The other redemption came out of the 2014 box and wasn't expired. And after about a month this arrived:

2014 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures Dave Kingman card #KNG

So a big thank you goes out from me to Panini for honoring both redemption's in a very timely manner.

Cards-R-Fun visit

This is a quick add on to yesterday's post. Whenever I make the trek to the Nashville card shows I always go to Cards-R-Fun, which is really the only card shop in the city. If you ever visit there be prepared to be overwhelmed, especially with the sheer quantity of singles in 3200ct boxes that are for sale, there must literally be a 100+ boxes in there. Also, to drain one's finances there is a plethora of memorabilia and tons of non sport collectibles for sale as well. Anyway, on this trip I spent the least that I have on any other visit, but I did finally remember to ask if there was any vintage non sports cards to be had. I only bought a few, and here they are for your viewing pleasure.

1969 Topps Brady Bunch card #38 .This was the first one of the cards from this set that I have seen in person.

A double dose of 1965 Donruss Freddie and the Dreamers cards.

This is only my second card from the 1961 Leaf Spook Stories set.
And the back.

And the only sports card from the trip. A 1969 Topps Ted Williams. The card is only slightly off center, but it is definitely good enough for my collection.

Thank you for taking a moment to look at my post.

Half-off box of happiness!

Twice a month in Nashville there is a card show that usually falls on second and fourth Saturday of the month, but occasionally the are three weeks apart. Such was the case at the show I went to at the end of last month.

It was the first of these shows that I have been to that was a three week gap edition. Since moving to Tennessee I have been to as many of the shows as I can get to, it can be difficult to get up the want, when you are going to be driving 3 1/2 to 4 hours round trip.

Anyway so I had hoped this particular show would be good so I made the trip, and I couldn't have been more wrong. I noticed right away that all of the regular sellers I usually buy from were not there and I thought I had drove all that way for nothing until I spied a fellow with a box about the size of a small moving box filled to the top with vintage baseball cards and sign on the box that said everything in the box was 50% off the marked prices. I was told that one guy had already looked through the box, but I could tell he hadn't delved too deep into this oasis of cardboard. I then proceeded to spend the next two hours going through every single card in the box and ended up spending $60 total on I don't know how many cards.

As I am just getting around to putting said cards in there respective binders I thought I would show off a few of my favorites. This just a small sampling of the group purchased.

There was lot of 1971's in the box but those were generally in the worst condition, so I only this one for 50 cents.

There was also a lot of  '57 Topps. Here are just couple of the dozen or so I got. I especially love the Pirates team card on the bottom that cost me a cool $1.50

                                            And the back:

      One 1964 coin for a $1.00

How about one 1949 Bowman for $1.50

I got a lot of  72's, but this was easily my favorite.

One regular 1970 Topps....

And one super

A couple of 1961 's

I got a lot of '69 Topps too. Mostly commons at 25-50 cents apiece to fill some set needs, but here are probably my two favorite.

I only got two 64's

There was a bunch of Hostess cards that I bought at 10-25 each. Here is a 1976 Johnny Bench that set me back $2.50, and with this card I am now about 60% towards finishing this set.

And now I saved the best two for last:

A 1961 Topps Bob Gibson for $5.00

And I will close this post out with this 1961 Topps Carl Yastrzemski. This one was all of $7.50. This was at the very bottom of the box and it's only protection was a penny sleeve.

I will have somewhat of a companion piece tomorrow. Thank you for taking a moment or two to look at this post.

Let's get this introduction out of the way.

Hi there future readers(hopefully), my name is Jon and this is my inaugural blog post. I have been thinking about dipping my toe into the water for over a year now and am now going to jump in head first.

In March of this year I moved from the Pacific Northwest, where I had lived for the first 30+ years of my life, to the Southern U.S. and it has been (and still is) a major adjustment in all areas of life. This blog will be primarily about collecting sports cards, but will also contain posts about other things that I collect and/or have an interest in.

I should also mention that my computer know how is less than ideal, so this might be one of the uglier looking blogs for a while, at least until I figure out what I'm doing.

So, if you like cards and rambling thoughts about collecting then this just might be a place for you to stop by occasionally.
