COMC hoard: What's so civil about a checklist, anyway?

It's always nice when building a set, to be able to get the most expensive card from it out of the way early on in the process. Which is exactly what I did with this 1962 Topps Civil War News Checklist:

Even though it's marked and has some noticeable condition issues, this would still go for anywhere between $10-$30 on eBay. I was able to procure this one a couple of months ago for $4 in earned credit.
I have no doubts that this will end up being the worst conditioned card in my eventual set, as I don't see myself paying $50 or more for an unmarked example.

Every time I'm looking at cards from this set or the '62 Mars Attacks! (in an upcoming post),it reminds me of when I first read about these sets in or around 1997-ish. I was enamored with both sets immediately, but at that time, it seemed very improbable that I would ever own a single card from either set due to the then exorbitant prices. If I hadn't taken such a long break from card collecting (2000-10), I probably would be done with this set by now. Better late than never though, right?

Thanks for taking a moment to look at my page.

  1. This is a set I'm still chasing a single card on. It went well down my priority list when I found out it wasn't based on actual events but was only Civil War themed.

    1. I actually prefer the fact that they are not based on actual events. It makes it easier for me to enjoy them in all their graphic glory, as opposed to if they were depicting explicit deaths of real people.

    2. Hmm, never thought if it like that. As a history/military history nut I'm kind of used to it, perhaps even desensitized, as I'm always reading about some sort of battle.

    3. Don't get me wrong, I'm not squeamish or unaccustomed to graphic wartime accounts/images. I have read more than my fair share of books in which all kinds of atrocities are described in finite detail. Plus my dad was a Vietnam vet, so I learned about all the heinous acts that were committed by both sides, at a very early age. So like said, for me it's just nice to be able to collect something like this, that isn't showing graphic death's of any living (at the time) person or persons.

  2. Nice pickup! I'm about 1/2 way to completing this set is :::ahem::: less than pristine condition. I lack the checklist and probably will for awhile until I find one about like yours.

    1. Thanks, it sounds like your much further along in your set build than I am. I don't think you will have too much trouble getting a checklist in similar condition as they seem to come up on a fairly regular basis on eBay, and the prices seem to vary quite a bit from auction to auction so there is a good chance that you will be able to get one at a decent price sooner or later.

  4. Interesting set subject. And tell me about this earned credit. Is it from a while back or is comc still running challenges?

    1. Their still running the challenges, although they were closed all of last week (highly unusual). They usually stick to a pretty regular schedule, and on most days a person can earn anywhere from $5-$10 in credit. I don't know if the schedule will change or not, when they reopen. I posted the times awhile back, but I would be more than happy to send you an email with either the old schedule or if they end up having a new one.
