A PWE from my past

Unexpected packages are a bit of a rarity here at Penny Sleeve central. I can count on one hand the number of times that something has just showed up out of the blue without any sort of head's up, the last one arriving a couple of months ago in the form of a PWE from, Matt, of Parts Of My Past fame.

It has taken me much longer to give public thanks than I had planned. I do have a fairly excuse though, that being that all of the cards are of the shiny, and mostly Prizm variety. My scanner doesn't do shiny Prizm very well, so I was waiting for a morning when the sun is just right so that I could go the photograph route. Problem is, I don't seem to ever be home when sun is just right, and on the occasion that I am, and it is, I'm always having to do something else, usually something that needs to be done before the afternoon heat arrives.

I started feeling a tad bit guilty for taking so long, so I've just gone ahead and scanned everything, which, in retrospect, I should've just done from the get go.

I haven't watched an all-star game since... give me a minute to think (insert chin rubbing emoji here). Okay, I got it, I haven't watched an all-star game since probably some time in the late 90's, mostly because the games are always garbage, that being said, I can still appreciate cards that feature more recent all-stars. The Pau (with brother Marc looking on from below) is especially nice, I already had a RWB, but I certainly didn't mind getting another. During my recent reorganization I created a bunch of player pages, both of the Gasol's have pages, as I'm a fan of both of them, heck, I'm a fan of their whole family (their parents are practically saints) -- I might have to get one more of these RWB Pau's just so they'll fill an entire row (having a row filled looks so good!).

To my knowledge, they have absolutely nothing in common, but I will forever be confusing Quincy Acy with Acie Law, and vice-versa, don't ask me why, it's just a thing of mine.

In general, I'm not a fan of the look to score-first point guards, but I do like Kemba Walker, although it might be more about how he carries himself, than his actual game. Hopefully he'll find a little more success in Boston, but after losing Al Horford, I don't see the Celtics making much noise next season, the east is pretty much just going to be the Bucks and Sixers (exciting?). And it's hard to tell from this bad scan, but this a Silver Prizm, very shiny in person, is it just me or are the Select silver's more refractory than the actual Prizm silver's?

I've said it many times here on the blog that I'm of the opinion that the 2015-16 Prizm design was the last good one. I know that, thanks in large part to speculators, the brand continues to grow in popularity, but man do the sets seem to be getting uglier and uglier with each passing year. This Manu is from the 2017-18 set, and boy howdy is that one boring design, but, and it's a big but, I am really big on Ginobili, have been since his rookie year. I made a space for him in my newly created player binders as well. After just recently finishing all of said player binders, I was kind of surprised to see just how few cards I actually had of Manu. How few is few? Try six whole cards, counting this one, which by the way was another silver prizm, so it's inclusion in the package was very much appreciated.

Thank you again for the cards, Matt! Surprise packages may be few and very far in between, but damn they sure are fun! A pile is slowly being built for you (which includes the Spx Finite that I asked you about a while back), so a return mailing will be in your future, I just don't know yet how distant in to the future that might be.

Thanks for taking a moment to look at my page.

  1. Sounds good Jon and don't worry about the delay in posting the mailing. Not even a concern to me. I do that a lot. I am glad you enjoyed and I may have a few more to send your way down the road as well!

  2. Good stuff. The Prizm parallels are always nice. My local stores never bothered to stock the 2016-17 or later sets, so I don't have too much from them.

    1. And here it's the opposite! I see people going crazy on Twitter because their local stores aren't stocking some of the newest sets, therefor they can't run out and buy a bunch of boxes in search of the "hot" rookie of the moment, meanwhile the shelves here are packed full of that crap because nobody wants it.

  3. I had an issue with scanning my latest refractor purchase today and was totally bummed that I couldn't get it to scan well. Thought about going the photo route myself... but just settled for the scan.

    1. It's always a struggle with my scanner, some things look good, and some things don't, usually I end up photographing and scanning the same things, and just end up using whatever looks best.

  4. Love the Kyle Korver parallel. The Korvers are from my hometown, and Kyle's dad was my Grandma's pastor before she passed away. He's a good dude!

    1. That's actually kind of interesting, one of those "it's a small world" moments! Is he someone that you collect because of this connection?

    2. Yep. It's definitely a smaller collection since I don't buy basketball packs, but if I see cards of him at a card shop I will pick them up.
