Another week, another ten randomly selected cards from last year's COMC Hoard!
1997-98 Upper Deck Teammates #T59
I don't look for MJ inserts very often, and almost never on COMC, but at some point last year I happened upon this one from seller who was looking like they were trying to get out of the COMC game. For around $3, I figured why not? I used to see cards from this set in dime boxes on a fairly regular basis, nowadays I only ever come across Shaq's card (#T25), so I've got like 5 or 6 copies of that one, and maybe 5 or 6 individual cards from the set.
1999-00 Upper Deck HoloGrFX NBA 24/7 AuSOME #N14AU
Know matter how long I live, I will never be able to own enough of the AuSOME parallels, especially those of the 24/7 variety.
2013 Panini Black Friday Panini Collection #20
Panini seemed to have had a brief infatuation with DJ Kool a few years back, it didn't last very long though, I think Biz Markie unintentionally ended up stealing his thunder.
1968 Topps #327
One for the "Telstar four" collection. Also, did Tony Taylor ever age? Judging by his cards, I'd say no... must've stayed away from those cigars that his country his so famous for.
2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #28 (x2)
Twin towers?
1999-00 Skybox NBA Hoops Decade Draft Day Dominance #8 DD
Like MJ, I don't look for Kobe inserts very often, but I love me some Hoops Decade, and can't get enough of it's inserts (even the one's that scan poorly), so yeah, Kobe!
2013 Panini Cooperstown Collection Green Crystal Shard #96
The bad thing about deciding not to finish a set that you're pretty far along on, is that you end up having a lot of unwanted cards (like this one), and no idea what to do with them. I did pull out half a dozen or so, but still have a rather large pile to deal with.
2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #183
I didn't think it would ever happen, but I've actually to regret a few of my Prizm purchases. I'm just not feeling some of the color combinations anymore, Karl here is a perfect example of that, purple doesn't exactly mesh with red, white, and yellow so well. After going through my current COMC holdings, I found a few more that I'm no longer overly fond of as well, and those have been put back up for sale -- one of which, sold almost immediately right after I relisted it, even made a ten-cent profit on it!
1962 Topps Mars Attacks! #35
I absolutely love the original Mars Attacks! set, but that doesn't make me immune to the fact that most of it's story, and imagery, were pieced together from - or inspired by - other works. This card is really fantastic, but it was clearly inspired by Them!, which is okay, because Them! is awesome, but still... a little bit more originality would've been nice.
2013 Panini Father's Day Progressions - yellow #38
It fitting that the randomizer would choose this card to finish off today's post, as it just so happens to be the final piece of my Chris Kreider Progressions rainbow.
In case you hadn't noticed, today's post isn't so great writing wise, my apologies for that, but this Saturday is one of the bi-annual super mega card shows, and I've been busy trying to align the stars, so that I might be able to go -- which has really taken me out of blog mode, hence this hastily thrown together offering.
Another week, another ten randomly selected cards from last year's COMC hoard!
1975-76 Topps #77
Walt Wesley was a decent player, but he was no match for Bill.
2016 Panini Certified Mirror Red #98
I know that I haven't seen all of his cards, but of the one's that I am familiar with, this is by far my favorite, I just really love the photo. I can't remember how many parallels this card has (10-12), but I do know that I have all but four of them... I'm not going to hold my breath over thinking that I might ever get the black 1/1 though!
1969-70 Topps #87
One of the oft forgotten members of the Blazers '76-77 championship team. Herm retired after getting his ring, despite having only played eight seasons, and at 30, still being young, and healthy, enough to have continued to contribute for many a team. And like a lot of ex-Blazers, Herm stayed in Oregon after his retirement, where he lived and worked until his passing in 2005.
1995-96 Topps Power Boosters #286
The '95-96 season was not a good one for Mark, in fact it would end up being his worst season, as injuries limited him to just seven games. Being the competitor (and great player) that he was, Mark did bounce back and play for two more season with Golden State and Orlando -- even leading the league in free throw percentage (90.6) during the '96-97 season.
2011 Topps Chrome Blue Refractor #50
Blue refractors and Ichiro go together like cream corn and wrestling :)
1975-76 Topps #324
Having folded after the previous season, the Sounds were just a memory by the time this set came out. Like most of the ABA franchises, the Sounds had been struggling financially, finishing the '74-75 season with a record of 27-57 only served to hasten their demise. Despite that terrible record, they still ended up making the playoffs (did I mention that the ABA was struggling?), losing to the eventual champion, the Kentucky Colonels, in the first round. Looking back, it's hard to believe that a team with the likes of Mel Daniels, George Carter, Freddie Lewis, Chuck Williams, Rick Mount, and Roger Brown (among others) could've finished so low in the rankings. No surprise that they would've done so poorly in their matchup with the Colonels though... that team was built to win!
1999 Pacific Revolution Icons #4
90's? Insert? Die-cut? Shiny? Pacific? Barry Sanders? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and YES!!!!
2014-15 Panini Prizm Blue and Green Mosaic Prizms #247
Panini went off the beaten path with this image. Instead of using one of the tried and true pictures of Spud from the late 80's, they went against the grain and selected a shot from his second stint with the Hawks. Spud came back to Atlanta for the 1995-96 season, which also happened to be the season that the Hawks rolled out their new logo (of which Spud is sporting). Funny thing is, Spud didn't end up playing in Atlanta very long, as he was traded to Minnesota after just 32 games -- meaning that this photo came from a rather narrow time period.
1962 Topps Mars Attacks! #25
This card is just a tad miscut, but you know something? I. Don't. Care! When it comes to this set, as long as it's not too creased, or missing too much paper, I'll pretty much take whatever I can get.
2012 Panini Black Friday Kings Cracked Ice #1
I didn't really need it, but I got this cracked ice to accompany my 3/4 completed Progressions rainbow anyway. If I remember correctly, these are unofficially numbered to /25, but no actual serial number was printed on the card though... your guess is as good as mine as to why not?
I don't know if anyone noticed or not, but I skipped last week's Shuffle. I was working on a long non-card related post earlier in the week, which I subsequently got stuck on, then couldn't get unstuck, got annoyed, and because of this I ended up not wanting to blog for the rest of the week... hence the missing post!
Another week, another ten randomly selected cards from last year's COMC hoard!
2013 Panini Cooperstown Collection Red Crystal Shard #53
Looks like we're staring off with my birthday twin! I've finally decided with complete certainty that I'm no longer going to try and finish this set, but I'll still keep a few cards, including this one (despite the blah photo) -- just in case I do decide to start collecting cards from his post-playing days.
1998-99 Topps Stadium Club Triumvirate - Luminous #T8a
I have around 100 cards of John Stockton (mostly inserts and parallels), and this is by far one of my favorites. Also, how great were Triumvirate's? Despite missing them greatly, I very much hope that Topps never decides to try and bring them back... because we all know that they would look like hot s*** if they ever did!
1962 Topps Mars Attacks! #10
I can't help but wonder if a card like this could be made now in our post 9/11 world?
2012 Topps Chrome Retail Orange Refractor #100
Of all of the parallels of this card from Topps and Topps Chrome, the orange refractor is probably my least favorite, so why do I have like four of them now? Simple, I love the image, and the orange's tend to be pretty cheap, well, that and my semi-recent penchant for buying multiple of the same card seems to be getting worse.
1972-73 Topps #244
Now that was a match-up (offensively speaking), Rick Barry v. George McGinnis!
2013 Panini Father's Day Progressions - Magenta #38
Another piece of the completed rainbow.
2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures #SC
With this one, the COMC folder is now devoid of Golden Age autos. Steve has an autograph in the 2012 and 2013 sets, both of which I own. With a lot of help from Affirmed, he became the youngest jockey to win the Triple Crown (1978), and was the only jockey to ever be named the sportsman of the year by Sports Illustrated.
1972-73 Topps #176
This card is interesting because this is back when they used the total number of assists to declare the season's leader, so you have Lenny Wilkens finishing in 1st with 766 assists, and Jerry West right behind him with 747 -- yet modern statistics will tell you that Jerry West led the league in assists during the '71-72 season with 9.7 apg, and Lenny Wilkens finished 2nd with 9.6 apg.
1963 Topps #31
Another one for the "Telstar Four" collection. I was trying to figure out who was in the background, but failed spectacularly... anybody have any clues?
2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #223
Some of the images that Panini used for veterans portion of the 2014 checklist are a bit iffy, some are even bad enough that it leads one to wonder what the photo selector's were thinking (or smoking), but not this one, this is a solid image of Artis Gilmore, and one that I believe is from the tail-end of his time with San Antonio, maybe '85-87? I also really like dig the stark contrast of background colors with his black jersey, it seems to make image pop more.
On an unrelated note, I meant to have a couple of more posts up this past week, but the Challenges happened, and I chose to try and start building the credit back up in my account over blog "writing", so... Sorry Not Sorry :)
Another week, another ten randomly selected items from last year's COMC hoard.
2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures #DDG
Not gonna lie, this is one of my favorite autos from the Golden Age sets. My introduction to Donna Douglas came from the Twilight Zone episode "Eye of the Beholder", which as some of you might know is one of the more famous episodes from the show's history. I saw that years before ever seeing my first episode of The Beverly Hillbillies, or any of her other television appearances (Michael Shayne, Checkmate, Project U.F.O., etc.). I keep going back and forth trying to decide whether or not I still want to try and finish the Golden Age autograph sets, but even if I don't end up trying to complete them, this isn't one that I would be getting rid of.
2015 Topps High Tek Pattern 1 Grass/Waves Gold Rainbow Diffractor #9
I really like the 2015 Tek cards, although some of the colors and background patterns don't jibe too well with the uniforms, but that's not the case with the gold Eric Dickerson, as you might be able to tell from the multiple copies here, it's one of my favorites (I have a purple Tom Brady sitting in my COMC account right now that is really quite spiffy as well).
1995 Collector's Edge - EdgeTech 22K Gold #23
Barry didn't scan so well, so you'll just have to take my word for it when I say that he (in card form) is absolutely gorgeous in person. I used to know what the odds were of pulling one of these 22K parallels, but that knowledge seems to have been lost with time. I do know though that they only fell in one out of every couple of boxes, I just can't remember how many boxes.
1964 Topps #580
1964 was not a good year for Johnny, and one could say that it was sort of the beginning of the end for him. Between an elbow strain, then being hit by a pitch from Warren Spahn on the very same elbow, and eventually needing surgery on that elbow, Johnny only made it into two games that season, both of which were lost.
2012 Panini Black Friday Progressions - Yellow #6
It feels a little weird to buy a card of a relatively contemporary athlete that I've never seen play before, but that's exactly what I did with this Arian Foster Progressions, although I have listened to his podcast, so that's got to count for something, right?
2014-15 Panini Prizm Blue and Green Mosaic Prizms #174
I've mentioned on here more than a few times now about Larry Johnson being my favorite player growing up, so I watched as many Hornets games as I could, and once he was traded to the Knicks, I then watched as many Knicks games as I could. Neither of these teams were MY team, but after watching so many games of both, it was kind of inevitable that I would become a fan of some of LJ's teammates as well, Allan Houston was one of those guys that I eventually became a fan of. It was pretty hard not to like him, or his game. Not only could he flat out ball, but he was also (and still is) a high character guy, and by the late 90's those kind of guys were becoming rather scarce, which only made me gravitate towards him more.
1971-72 Topps #44
To say that the '71-72 season was not a good one for Eddie Miles would be an understatement, as he suffered a career ending Achilles tendon injury, although by then he had already seen ten years of action, and his once very promising career was already on the downward slide. That being said, you don't ever want to hear about someone's career ending because of an injury.
2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #160
It is virtually impossible for me to see, or hear about, Dikembe Mutombo, without thinking about this commercial:
1962 Topps Mars Attacks! #12
This is going to sound absolutely terrible, but for as long as I can remember, I've always associated this card with this image of Ted Williams (sorry Mark):
Don't ask me why I associate the two, because I don't know, I just know that I can't see one without thinking of the other.
1972-73 Topps #65
Although he's not often credited for it in print, Tom Boerwinkle was a key component to the success of the early Bulls teams. As far as Bulls history goes, he's second in all-time rebounds (MJ is first?!?!), and he still holds the franchise record for most rebounds in a game, 37, which was set back in 1970.
Is it me, or did those ten cards go by really quick this week? Heck, the week itself has flown by, of course they all seem to be doing that these days... they just don't make weeks like they used to :(
Another week, another ten randomly selected cards from last year's COMC hoard!
2012 Panini Black Friday Panini Collection Progressions - Yellow #BM
When it comes to the Progressions, yellow is usually my least favorite of the colors, however, in Biz' case, it's my favorite. To me, it just pops.
2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures #SMC
This is kind of a crossover card for me, as not only was it a needed Golden Age auto, but it also features Sam McDowell, who went 8-0 (with a 1.18 ERA) during his nine-game stint with the Portland Beavers back in 1964.
2015-16 Panini Prizm Red, White, & Blue Prizm #41
I'm not overly fond of this card, but it was a cheap LA that I didn't have, so I got it. This will be one of the few Prizm parallels that I'm collecting THAT I won't need multiples of... unless of course I happen upon a few more in a dime box!
1962 Topps Mars Attacks! #23
Even though it's fairly contemporary, I can't see this card and not think of this:
2018 Panini Classics Timeless Tributes Gold #138
Right after this set came out, a blue optichrome (#'d to /5) Marcus Allen hit eBay, I tried to bid on it, but ended up losing in spectacular fashion... that sure was a pretty card :(
1997-98 Bowman's Best Atomic Refractor #120
I've been trying to cut down on random purchases, but '97-98 atomic refractors are so darn hard to pass up when priced at less than a buck.
1998-99 Upper Deck Ionix Reciprocal #R24
John Starks in a Warriors uni still doesn't look right.
2013 Panini Father's Day Museum Collection Progressions - Magenta #MC-4
I love me some Progressions, but I'm not too keen on this one. Don't ask me why, because I don't really know, I'm just not feeling it. I got a little carried away with the Progressions, and this is one that I probably should've left behind. If I ever get around to trading via the TCDB, this'll be one of the first cards that I make available.
1933 Goudey #171
Charlie Jamieson was a new name for me, as are about half of the Goudey's I get. His last game played was in '32, so it was kind of nice of the Goudey folks to include him in this set. After 18 seasons, Charlie finished with a .303 average and 1990 hits, which wasn't too shabby for someone who started out as a pitcher (went 2-1 in the bigs). Other notable accomplishments include winning a World Series with Cleveland in 1920, and in 1923 his 222 hits were tops in the American League.
2014-15 Panini Prizm Green Prizms #144
An appropriately colored parallel given Wes' new team. Love the guy, and he will forever be one of my favorite Blazers, but I sure do wish that he would've signed with just about anybody other than Milwaukee.
