1997-98 Upper Deck Teammates #T59

I don't look for MJ inserts very often, and almost never on COMC, but at some point last year I happened upon this one from seller who was looking like they were trying to get out of the COMC game. For around $3, I figured why not? I used to see cards from this set in dime boxes on a fairly regular basis, nowadays I only ever come across Shaq's card (#T25), so I've got like 5 or 6 copies of that one, and maybe 5 or 6 individual cards from the set.

Know matter how long I live, I will never be able to own enough of the AuSOME parallels, especially those of the 24/7 variety.

Panini seemed to have had a brief infatuation with DJ Kool a few years back, it didn't last very long though, I think Biz Markie unintentionally ended up stealing his thunder.

One for the "Telstar four" collection. Also, did Tony Taylor ever age? Judging by his cards, I'd say no... must've stayed away from those cigars that his country his so famous for.

Like MJ, I don't look for Kobe inserts very often, but I love me some Hoops Decade, and can't get enough of it's inserts (even the one's that scan poorly), so yeah, Kobe!


2013 Panini Cooperstown Collection Green Crystal Shard #96

The bad thing about deciding not to finish a set that you're pretty far along on, is that you end up having a lot of unwanted cards (like this one), and no idea what to do with them. I did pull out half a dozen or so, but still have a rather large pile to deal with.

2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #183

I didn't think it would ever happen, but I've actually to regret a few of my Prizm purchases. I'm just not feeling some of the color combinations anymore, Karl here is a perfect example of that, purple doesn't exactly mesh with red, white, and yellow so well. After going through my current COMC holdings, I found a few more that I'm no longer overly fond of as well, and those have been put back up for sale -- one of which, sold almost immediately right after I relisted it, even made a ten-cent profit on it!

1962 Topps Mars Attacks! #35

I absolutely love the original Mars Attacks! set, but that doesn't make me immune to the fact that most of it's story, and imagery, were pieced together from - or inspired by - other works. This card is really fantastic, but it was clearly inspired by Them!, which is okay, because Them! is awesome, but still... a little bit more originality would've been nice.

2013 Panini Father's Day Progressions - yellow #38

It fitting that the randomizer would choose this card to finish off today's post, as it just so happens to be the final piece of my Chris Kreider Progressions rainbow.

In case you hadn't noticed, today's post isn't so great writing wise, my apologies for that, but this Saturday is one of the bi-annual super mega card shows, and I've been busy trying to align the stars, so that I might be able to go -- which has really taken me out of blog mode, hence this hastily thrown together offering.

Looks like we're staring off with my birthday twin! I've finally decided with complete certainty that I'm no longer going to try and finish this set, but I'll still keep a few cards, including this one (despite the blah photo) -- just in case I do decide to start collecting cards from his post-playing days.

 

1998-99 Topps Stadium Club Triumvirate - Luminous #T8a

I have around 100 cards of John Stockton (mostly inserts and parallels), and this is by far one of my favorites. Also, how great were Triumvirate's? Despite missing them greatly, I very much hope that Topps never decides to try and bring them back... because we all know that they would look like hot s*** if they ever did!

I can't help but wonder if a card like this could be made now in our post 9/11 world?

2012 Topps Chrome Retail Orange Refractor #100

Of all of the parallels of this card from Topps and Topps Chrome, the orange refractor is probably my least favorite, so why do I have like four of them now? Simple, I love the image, and the orange's tend to be pretty cheap, well, that and my semi-recent penchant for buying multiple of the same card seems to be getting worse.

Another piece of the completed rainbow.

2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures #SC

With this one, the COMC folder is now devoid of Golden Age autos. Steve has an autograph in the 2012 and 2013 sets, both of which I own. With a lot of help from Affirmed, he became the youngest jockey to win the Triple Crown (1978), and was the only jockey to ever be named the sportsman of the year by Sports Illustrated.

1972-73 Topps #176

This card is interesting because this is back when they used the total number of assists to declare the season's leader, so you have Lenny Wilkens finishing in 1st with 766 assists, and Jerry West right behind him with 747 -- yet modern statistics will tell you that Jerry West led the league in assists during the '71-72 season with 9.7 apg, and Lenny Wilkens finished 2nd with 9.6 apg.

Another one for the "Telstar Four" collection. I was trying to figure out who was in the background, but failed spectacularly... anybody have any clues?

2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #223

Some of the images that Panini used for veterans portion of the 2014 checklist are a bit iffy, some are even bad enough that it leads one to wonder what the photo selector's were thinking (or smoking), but not this one, this is a solid image of Artis Gilmore, and one that I believe is from the tail-end of his time with San Antonio, maybe '85-87? I also really like dig the stark contrast of background colors with his black jersey, it seems to make image pop more.

On an unrelated note, I meant to have a couple of more posts up this past week, but the Challenges happened, and I chose to try and start building the credit back up in my account over blog "writing", so... Sorry Not Sorry :)

Another week, another ten randomly selected cards from last year's COMC hoard.

2013-14 Panini Prizm Green Prizms #186 (x3)

I mentioned a few posts back that I've been reorganizing, and have completely changed the way that I sort and store cards. While doing this I've come across a few surprises, one of which is finding out how many cards I have of certain player's, LaMarcus being one of those, granted my "collection" of his consists mostly of Prizm parallels, but still, I didn't realize that I had so many of them/him.

2013-14 Panini Prizm Prizms #251

I generally don't care too much for the Prizm Prizm's, or as they're referred to now, Silver Prizm's -- and sometimes just plain old, Silver's. Up until a few years ago, they were the most common parallel, and yet someone, somewhere, decided that these were going to be the most expensive, and desired, Prizm parallel?!?! I just don't get it, but of course I love colors though, so that might have a little something to do with it. All that being said, I love the look of the black and white photos that were used in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 sets. In my opinion they make for the best looking base cards, B&W on a grey background just pops, and they also look really good on the Silver's, plus if you turn them just right, you'll get a bit of rainbow, which is seen much better on the non-color photo cards.

2013 Panini Father's Day #38

After completing my Chris Kreider Progressions rainbow, I decided to take it even further and get the base card, and the Cracked Ice card. I'm only an autograph card - which may or may not even exist - away from completing a true rainbow. I haven't really gone out of my way to try and do this by the way, it's just been a small side project that would be cool to complete, but I'd also be fine with it if I didn't ever get the auto, completing the Progressions was the only thing that really mattered to me.


1971-72 Topps #144 (blank back)

I bought this card during last year's Black Friday sale, then apparently forgot about it within minutes, which caused a bit of a confusion when the shipment arrived a few weeks later. While going through the box to see if everything was there, I spotted a very familiar looking card, and couldn't figure out why I had bought it. I mean I was about 99.9% sure that I already had this checklist, but just in case, I went and found the set binder, started flipping through the pages, couldn't find it, so I flipped it over to see the card number, and guess what? THERE WAS NO CARD NUMBER!!!!! I felt like such a f*cking idiot (even more so than usual)! I wasted like fifteen minutes trying to find the binder, which of course could've been avoided had I just flipped the card over to begin with. And for the record, I do have the regular checklist, and after seeing that this was a blank back, the memory of it's purchase did come back to me.

Remember how I was just saying how much I like the Prizm B&W photos on the grey and silver backgrounds, yeah well, I really like 'em on red too. I also don't hate them...

... on gold either! And Bill is numbered to /10 by the way, so that's kind of cool.

And finally, one for the "Telstar 4" collection.

With all of the Prizm parallels that were gotten last year (which is something that I didn't realize until I started scanning/photographing everything), I have been half-expecting the randomizer (shuffle button) to fill up one of these ten-card posts with nothing but Prizm. With seven of the ten spots being occupied by Prizm, it almost did so this week, probably much to the chagrin of everybody but me!

2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures #AL

My memory isn't always the best, but I remember this card, as it was the first one that I bought (using earned credit) during last year's Black Friday sale. I already had one copy of this card, but it was so darn cheap that I just couldn't pass up getting another one. Most folks probably would've tried to flip it, I ain't most folks though, so I kept it, I mean there's really such a thing as having too many autographs of Mr. Tiger... even if they are duplicates?

1972 Topps #734

A 1972 High number... dun dun duuuuun! Whenever this was gotten, I was undoubtedly still under the impression that I would be working on the set at some point, however I am no longer under any such delusions. All is not lost though, as I will soon be starting something that I've been thinking about, and even talking about publicly, for years now, which is to try and collect all of the former Portland Beavers who appeared on cards through 1973 (I might change that cutoff point to '75). Bob Burda spent all of 1961 in Portland, so he would obviously fit right in to such a collection.

1971 Milk Duds whole box

I already covered my disappointment with the damaged Milk Dud boxes that I received, so I won't rehash it again here today, I'll just that Luis is the only one of the non-damaged boxes that I will be keeping.

2013-14 Panini Prizm Retail Green Prizms #254

The 2013 Prizm set has a few Christmas cards in it, that being a green parallel with a player in red jersey or vice-versa. I'm of the opinion that Hakeem (despite the bad scan) is the best looking of those Xmas cards, so much so in fact, that I ended up getting all of the available copies that the site had to offer. Now if another one ever shows up, the seller will probably price it at something crazy like $20, because COMC logic dictates that if you have the only one on the site, then it must be crazy rare... and worth a small fortune.

1933 Goudey #39

Mark was the last surviving member of the 1927 Murderer's Row, won two titles with the Yankees, but the thing that I find most interesting about him, isn't even baseball related, no, it's that he was born in San Francisco in July of 1904, less than two years before the 1906 earthquake. He touches on this a bit in a really good 1987 Los Angeles Times article -- he also shares plenty of anecdote's from his playing days as well.

If you had told me three years ago that I would one day own around twenty hockey cards, and that Chris Kreider would be representing almost half of that collection, I would've said "Who are you, and how did you get into my bathroom?".

I know nothing of racing, and I'm not even going to pretend to, old D. Wayne (don't call me Dwayne!) was a card that I needed for my set, so I got him, that's all.

1973 Kellogg's Pro Super Stars #34

Ah, my favorite Kellogg's set! I always wonder how many people cringe every time I say that? But trust me, I'm not saying for the shock value, it truly is my favorite Kellogg's set, I'm not collecting it anymore, but I will still be picking up the bigger names when the price is right.

1999-00 Flair Showcase Elevators #7E

I think that this was only my second card from the set. Love this insert set too, it's like the cracked ice cards before there was such a thing as cracked ice cards. It's always nice to be able to get inserts of Pippen in a Blazers uni as well.

2013 Panini Father's Day Cracked Ice #38

If you read Wednesday's post, than you already know that I completed my Chris Kreider Progressions rainbow, but I also, somewhat unnecessarily, went ahead and got the base and cracked ice versions as well. Supposedly there's a sticker autograph version as well, which I have yet to see, but even if I did come across one, I don't know if I would get it or not... I really don't like sticker autographs!

Johnny was gotten for the little Telstar project that I've got going, which is basically just a collection of the four guys (JC, George Altman, Cal Koonce, and Tony Taylor) who were shown during the live look-in of the Cubs/Phillies game at the beginning of the1962 Telstar broadcast.


1999 Upper Deck HoloGrFX AuSOME #AU45

I'm very partial to the AuSOME parallels on the basketball side, but I'm not gonna turn my nose up at a crazy cheap version from HoloGrFX's football set either. And is it just me, or does it seem like Kordell Stewart has an insane amount of cards out there?

I love that Panini decided to include Shawn Kemp into a couple years worth of their Prizm sets, but with the exception of his 2015 card, they sure chose some boring photos of a guy who was, at least at one time, one of the most electrifying player's on the court.

1933 Goudey #143

Glenn was a member of the 1925 world champion Pittsburgh Pirates team (he was also the last surviving member of said Pittsburgh Pirates team). Considered to be one of the elite shortstops of his generation, at least until he suffered a shoulder injury in 1929, which would ultimately lead to a shortened career. He finished his 11-year career with a .294 Ba, 1219 hits, 723 RBI's, and 94 HR's.

2013 Panini Black Friday Score Hot Rookies Progressions - Black #4

I won't be trying to complete MCW's rainbow, but I couldn't pass up yet another /5 card for less than a buck! It's amazing how quick he ended up dropping off of the radar... yet another example of someone falling victim to too much hype.

2014-15 Panini Prizm Red, White, and Blue Pulsar Prizms #28

Some Blazers fans are still harboring ill-will towards LaMarcus for leaving a couple of years ago, I am not one of them. I never did begrudge for wanting to leave, he felt slighted, and wasn't happy, it's kind of hard for me to hate someone for that. Besides, he at least went to a team that he thought would have a better chance of winning, I may have been a little annoyed if he had chose money over winning and signed a big contract with someone like the Knicks, but he didn't, so I wasn't. Do I wish that he would've stayed? Certainly. Do I think that he made the wrong decision? I do (and from what I've read recently, I think he now realizes it as well). That being said, I hope he continues to have success no matter where he plays, unless it's for the Lakers, then he'd be dead to me :)


1990 Score #697

I had thought briefly about adding the Bo b/w to the list of the couple of cards that I'm trying to get as many copies of as I can, but after doing some brief looking around, I saw that there's already a couple of other people out there who are already doing so. Since I'm not looking to compete with anyone, and I'm certainly not wanting to pay a premium in order to do so, I decided to not join the ranks of the other Bo b/w super hoarder's. I'm not known for making smart decisions, but I do think that this was one of the better card decisions that I've made in recent years.
