COMC Shuffle #28

Another week, another ten randomly selected cards from last year's COMC Hoard!

1997-98 Upper Deck Teammates #T59
I don't look for MJ inserts very often, and almost never on COMC, but at some point last year I happened upon this one from seller who was looking like they were trying to get out of the COMC game. For around $3, I figured why not? I used to see cards from this set in dime boxes on a fairly regular basis, nowadays I only ever come across Shaq's card (#T25), so I've got like 5 or 6 copies of that one, and maybe 5 or 6 individual cards from the set.

1999-00 Upper Deck HoloGrFX NBA 24/7 AuSOME #N14AU
Know matter how long I live, I will never be able to own enough of the AuSOME parallels, especially those of the 24/7 variety.

2013 Panini Black Friday Panini Collection #20
Panini seemed to have had a brief infatuation with DJ Kool a few years back, it didn't last very long though, I think Biz Markie unintentionally ended up stealing his thunder.

1968 Topps #327
One for the "Telstar four" collection. Also, did Tony Taylor ever age? Judging by his cards, I'd say no... must've stayed away from those cigars that his country his so famous for.

2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #28 (x2)
Twin towers?

1999-00 Skybox NBA Hoops Decade Draft Day Dominance #8 DD
Like MJ, I don't look for Kobe inserts very often, but I love me some Hoops Decade, and can't get enough of it's inserts (even the one's that scan poorly), so yeah, Kobe!

2013 Panini Cooperstown Collection Green Crystal Shard #96
The bad thing about deciding not to finish a set that you're pretty far along on, is that you end up having a lot of unwanted cards (like this one), and no idea what to do with them. I did pull out half a dozen or so, but still have a rather large pile to deal with.

2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #183
I didn't think it would ever happen, but I've actually to regret a few of my Prizm purchases. I'm just not feeling some of the color combinations anymore, Karl here is a perfect example of that, purple doesn't exactly mesh with red, white, and yellow so well. After going through my current COMC holdings, I found a few more that I'm no longer overly fond of as well, and those have been put back up for sale -- one of which, sold almost immediately right after I relisted it, even made a ten-cent profit on it!

1962 Topps Mars Attacks! #35
I absolutely love the original Mars Attacks! set, but that doesn't make me immune to the fact that most of it's story, and imagery, were pieced together from - or inspired by - other works. This card is really fantastic, but it was clearly inspired by Them!, which is okay, because Them! is awesome, but still... a little bit more originality would've been nice.

2013 Panini Father's Day Progressions - yellow #38
It fitting that the randomizer would choose this card to finish off today's post, as it just so happens to be the final piece of my Chris Kreider Progressions rainbow.

In case you hadn't noticed, today's post isn't so great writing wise, my apologies for that, but this Saturday is one of the bi-annual super mega card shows, and I've been busy trying to align the stars, so that I might be able to go -- which has really taken me out of blog mode, hence this hastily thrown together offering.

COMC Shuffle #19

Another week, another ten randomly selected cards from last year's COMC hoard!

1969 Topps #34
Even though Merlin's actual rookie card was in the 1964 Philadelphia set, this one from five years later also gets labeled as a rookie, why? Because it's his first Topps card, so therefor it's considered to be his Topps "rookie"... card collecting can be really dumb sometimes! Despite it's faux rookie status, I absolutely love this card, so much so, that I wouldn't mind completing an entire page of it. I think I have three or four now, so I'm pretty sure that attempting to fill a page would be very doable.

2015-16 Panini Prizm Light Blue Prizms #274
Such a classic photo! This ones in my top 3 from the 2015-16 set, partly because of the image, and partly because it looks good in any color, although I am of the opinion that the light blue and red are the two best looking parallels for this particular card.

1999-00 Skybox E-X E-Xceptional #7XC
This is a set that I really wanted to complete at one time, but I waited too long to try and do so, and with the amount of fake Kobe's that are out there now, I'm just not comfortable trying to buy one and hope that it's real -- and buying a graded one doesn't necessarily insure it's authenticity either, especially now that we know a little bit more about how the grading companies have been operating, and who knows what other revelations will come out further down the line. Thank goodness the Asian counterfeiters don't bother with guys like Pippen (at least not in this set), so I can at least buy a few of these (I've got three of Scottie) when they're cheap, and not have to worry about their authenticity.

2011 Topps Cognac Diamond Anniversary #490.2
I feel like I used to know what particular moment was being celebrated in this photo, but for the life of me I can no longer recall the specifics behind it, anyone?

1971-72 Topps #67
I'm less than 20 cards away from completing this set, but I'm not so sure that I'll be trying to finish it anymore. I still need Jerry West, as well as the rookies of Barry and Cowens, all of three of which have proven to be quite difficult to find in relatively good condition, at an affordable price. Plus I continue to move further and further away from sets, anymore I just don't see the appeal of spending a bunch of money to complete something, only to then put it away in a binder, or a box, and then never look at it again (that is what most people do). I do wish though that I hadn't gotten so far a long on some of these sets before coming to this realization.

1962 Post #58
As of 1962, Nick was the Lions all-time leading rusher. As of 2019, he's #5, and we all know who's number one on that list!

2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic Prizms #205
It's always interesting to see how two of the same Prizm cards will scan together, there's always one that ends up looking better than the other, I don't know a lot about such things, but I'm assuming that it has something to do with the direction of the light that is scanning across them.

2012 Panini Black Friday Panini Collection - Cracked Ice #BM
Much like the Jim Brown Progressions rainbow that I'm hoping to complete at some point (as well as the Chris Kreider rainbow that I did complete), I went ahead and bought the base and cracked ice versions for the Biz Markie rainbow that is also 3/4 of the way towards being completed.

2014 Panini Prizm Red, White, & Blue Prizms #89
Roses are red, violets are blue, something something... J-Stew :)

2013 Panini Father's Day Progressions - Cyan #13
I don't always buy Kobe's, but when I do...

Stay thirsty my friends!

COMC Shuffle #2

Hey there, and welcome to the second edition of the new series that everyone's been talking about... what? You say that you haven't heard anyone talking about it? Well, it's entirely possible that I may have exaggerated a little, nonetheless, you're here, and I'm here, so let's do this!

On the off chance that you missed last week's inaugural post, and you don't feel like going back to see what's what, the concept is pretty simple, in that I'm just letting my picture program's shuffle feature decide which ten items from last year's COMC horde gets shown per post. See, simple!

1961-62 Fleer #32
A multiple time all-star, and multiple time champion (three with the Celtics), Willie's one of those great players that fans just don't seem to remember anymore, or worse, just don't care enough about to go read up on.

Don't know if anyone's interested, but here's the back anyway.

2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic #64 (x2)
Collecting hall of famers is always fun, but collecting future hall of famers can be just as fun.

2018 Panini Classics Timeless Tributes Gold #133
Of all of the Classics parallels that I own - which really isn't that many - this Paul Hornung ranks up there amongst my favorites... so much yellow!

2012 Panini Black Friday Panini Collection Progressions - Magenta #BM
I'm working on a number of Progressions rainbows right now (I've even finished two), Biz is by far my favorite one that I've got going. I have 3 out of the 4, but the black is proving to be rather elusive, of course when there's only five copies out there, it isn't hard to imagine to why. I don't have a most wanted list or anything, but if I did, that black would be at the very top.

1999-00 Upper Deck HoloGrFX Maximum Jordan #MJ4
I've made my feelings known about MJ on this blog many times over the years (not a fan), but I do like 90's inserts, and HoloGrFX was, and still is, one of my favorite sets, so...

Upper Deck really went bonkers with the MJ insert sets, most of which are terribly uninteresting, but I am working on this one, in fact I now only need one more to complete the six-card set.

2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures #JEH
Only two posts in to this series, and the shuffler already landed on the most expensive card from last year's haul. Whether it's big-time movies like The Bad News Bears or Watchmen (if you haven't seen the director's cut, watch that version), unfairly cancelled television series' like Human Target, or even all but forgotten cartoons like Gravedale High, Jackie Earle Haley never disappoints. Of all of the Bears signatures in the 2013 set, Jackie is the most pricey, not only because of everything else he's done, but also because of all the Bears signers, he signed the least amount of cards. And even though it was a bit higher than I would've liked to pay (or rather, use credit on), I'm still happy to say that I got it for less than the going rate on eBay.

2014-15 Panini Prizm Yellow and Red Mosaic #134
It seems like I've seen multiple discussions on Twitter in recent weeks about whether or not VC is hall worthy. If I was in charge of such things, he wouldn't make it (nothing personal, I just don't think that he's done enough), but I'm not, so he will be elected at some point (I'll put money on that).

2013-14 Panini Prizm Retail Green #235
I didn't used to notice the matching color parallels, but thanks to Chris and his collection of them, I now do - and dare I say, that I've actually gone out of my way a few times to look for them in the last year or two.

2013 Panini National Convention Progressions - Black #7
Without looking at my binder, I think this is my only progression from one of The National sets. I prefer the progressions from the Black Friday sets, but it was just too hard to pass up a Kobe card that has a print run of 5, for less than $5 (in credit).

2011 Topps Lineage Reprint Autographs #RA-CD
Love this autograph set, but like a lot of other things, it's been sort of pushed to a back burner. As for the player depicted, there doesn't seem to be whole hell of a lot of info out there about Chuck Diering, even the SABR people haven't done a piece on him yet - probably should have started working on that before he passed away back in 2012, hmm?

Another decent selection, if I don't say so myself. I can see that me and this shuffler are going to get along just fine :)

COMC Shuffle #1

During the life of this blog, nothing has vexed me more than how to go about showing the goods from my yearly COMC shipment. I've tried so many different things over the last couple of years that I can't even remember them all.

Last year I thought that I had finally come up with a solution with my "COMC Sundays" series. It worked out pretty well... for about three weeks! I found out pretty quickly that limiting this stuff to just Sundays didn't work out for me, I just need more flexibility than that. Plus the whole grouping of similar items together thing, didn't really do much for my want of variety.

This really wouldn't as much of a problem (and yes, I realize that it's not a "real" problem) if I just did like everyone else and got multiple shipments throughout the year, but I'm just too cheap to pay for shipping when I know that it'll be free after the Black Friday sale. Because of this, I always end up with a couple of hundred cards - all bought and paid for with credit that was earned from doing the Challenges - right before Christmas, and then have no idea how to work them into the blog... hence this longstanding problem.

Thankfully, I do believe that this problem of mine has now been solved, and the solution to it came to me quite by accident back in January while I was editing some photos.

I don't know if it had always been there, or if had just been added after one of the seemingly never ending updates, but I noticed an option at the top of the open folder page that said "shuffle". Upon seeing this new to me feature, I couldn't figure out for the life of me why anyone would want to shuffle their photos, so I just went back to my editing, but while doing so, I kept thinking about this new option -- so when I was done, just for poops and guffaws I gave it a go on the picture folder that I was in, and it did just what I thought it would do... it mixed up my photos/scans!

I know that this probably isn't too terribly exciting to read about, so I'll try to get to the point a little quicker, which is, after I saw the mix, an idea happened, one that'll likely change the course of this blog's history (well, not really, but it sure sounds dramatic, doesn't it?). The idea, put all of my COMC photos/scans into a single folder, shuffle it, and then make a blog post featuring the first ten items, in the same order that they came out of the shuffle in. Sounds pretty simple, right? So let's hit that shuffle, and see what we end up with!

2012 Panini Black Friday Kings Progressions - Yellow #9
No need to adjust your television sets, I am indeed leading off with a hockey card, or rather the shuffle has me leading off with a hockey card. Of the 300 or so cards that I stockpiled last year, this Gordie Howe would probably make my top 20 list, not only because it's Gordie Howe, but also because it's one of Panini's Progressions cards, which are something that I've quietly been collecting over the last year and a half (I have a post in the works about that collection).

For anyone who may be unfamiliar with them, the Progressions are essentially proof cards that were added to Panini's promotional/seasonal sets (Black Friday, Father's Day, etc) from 2012-14. The proofs came in four colors, black, cyan, magenta, and yellow - and each color was limited to just five copies, which can make the completion of a rainbow quite difficult.

1999-00 Topps Record Numbers #RN7
As far as 90's basketball inserts go, Record Numbers isn't one of the more exciting ones. However, if you're not rolling in dough, and you like the idea of actually being able to complete a 90's basketball insert set, well then, this one just might be worth a consideration - it's a lower tiered insert set, which means it's cheap, and the cards are quite plentiful.

1933 Goudey #191
Depending on who it is that's writing about him, Ben Chapman was either a very good player, or a player that was great, but will never be considered for the HOF because of his bigoted ways, especially since those unfortunate feelings of his were very much directed towards Jackie Robinson. By all accounts, he did change, and see the error of his earlier beliefs towards the end of his life, but he will most likely always be remembered for his actions during his playing/managerial days.

I know that some folks like seeing the Goudey backs, so for your viewing pleasure I did go ahead and scan all of them.

2013-14 Panini Prizm Wal-Mart Blue #248
Is that Saddam Hussein in the background?

2012 Topps Golden Moments #537 (x4)
I had a lot of duplicates in my COMC order, so I just scanned them altogether, otherwise, at least in Ichiro's case, I'd end up with four different posts that contained the same card, and that doesn't work for me.

1999-00 Upper Deck Ultimate Victory Ultimate Collection #133
I had stopped collecting cards altogether by the time this set came out, so I never got to experience these wonderful parallels when they were new, in fact I didn't even know about them until last year. Too bad they don't scan very well, but you can at least still see the serial number down by Corey's right foot. Something that was limited to just 100 copies back in 1999 might as well have been the equivalent of one of today's 1/1's.

2013-14 Panini Prizm Retail Green #230 (x3)
One of my favorite photos from the 2013 Prizm set. Dave DeBusschere isn't exactly the most popular player with the kids, which works out well for me, because then I can pickup as many of the parallels as I want without any competition (provided that the price is reasonable of course).

2014-15 Panini Prizm Blue and Green Mosaic #168
This might be a good time to mention that there is going to be a lot of Prizm parallels in these posts. Uncle Cliffy was one of my favorite players as a kid, Panini seems to be fond of him too, as they have included him in multiple years worth of Prizm sets.

2000 EX E-Xceptional #9XC
At the time of it's purchase, this was my first ever E-Xceptional on the football side. This is one of those insert sets that E-X did across all sports, and all of them look amazing!

1957 Topps #386
This is one of those cards that I had obviously gotten quite awhile ago, because I didn't even remember buying it until I saw it in with the shipment. At the time of it's purchase, I was still under the delusion that I could actually complete this set somewhere down the road, that delusion has since passed, so since doesn't fit into any of my recently started mini-collections, it'll end up getting sold or traded (probably sold).

Not the best way to end this first post, but I guess that's what happens when you let a randomizer choose the order of the cards. Overall though, I liked the variety, hopefully a few of you did as well. Looking ahead, I can see that there won't be a lot of incoming cards in the next couple of months, so by turning this into a weekly series, I will at least be able to have some card content on the blog for the foreseeable future - at least until they run out, but by then I should have this year's stockpile in hand to keep the series running.

Thanks for taking a moment to look at my page.
